I caught up with frontman Dancette Pleasure, drummer Disco Pleasure and bassist Sensai Pleasure and asked them a slew of ass-kicking glam rock questions, uber-style!!
Now I know this may surprise you guys but for some of our readers The Pleasures may be something of a new name - can you introduce yourselves and give us a potted history of the band to bring everyone up to speed?
Dancette Pleasure: Hello, we are The Pleasures from Germany and we bring the show back right on stage back in your face with a glitter trace...we make you watch before you hear, make real life disappear. We have been in the saddle of wild glam rock since 2004, toured in over seven countries, played as opening act for bands like Hanoi Rocks, Robin Black, The High Society, and the rest of T-Rex, we released a couple of albums and....what does our name stand for...Disco, help me!
Disco Pleasure: ...our name stands for all the sweet and desirable pleasures that everyone has. But not everyone is able to admit his or her desires. Maybe it's because you're afraid what your parents or friends might say about you. Or maybe it's because you feel like there's something deep inside of you that wants to come out, but at the same time you feel like you can't allow that to happen! But we are here to tell you: free all of your hidden pleasures and live your life like a sinner! We are all sinners...
Dancette Pleasure: People can expect what they have to expect of a glam rock show: Wild and hard (and sometimes sensuous) glam rock songs, boys in make-up wearing dresses which
And what exactly is the (R)evolution of Glam Rock?
Dancette Pleasure: Well, we are not just a copy of the good old times. I must admit we are a little inspired by artists like David Bowie, T-Rex, Slade, Kiss and stuff but this inspiration is well mixed with that what's going on in our heads for we all are pretty young (NOT 50!), plus our special opinion of glam rock.
Disco Pleasure: Good question! When you visit one of our concerts, you may feel like you have never seen anything like us! We are fun, we are sexy, we are loud and proud. Glam rock is able to free people from their boring jobs and make them go wild. Some say, that glam rock is dead. But when we see the happy faces at our concerts, we know that this is not true. We are able to change your mind and make your life a little bit more enjoyable. Maybe even a lot more enjoyable, if you let us. It is a lifestyle that makes you more attractive (and horny of course). Maybe the (r)evolution is just in your head, but that is all we want!
Your UK PR people mentioned to us that you have an album in the pipeline - when could we expect to see this?
Dancette Pleasure: We worked really hard on that album during the last half year and each day we are adding some new tunes but the work is not done yet. By the way we started the recordings for the new album back in 2009. It's also up to our label which sometimes delays a release because of promotional work. I would be a very happy man when we will release this autumn.
Disco Pleasure: This is a tough one. After Lord Pleasure left the band, we have had to arrange us in a new fashion. But things are getting more concrete and we are coming closer to a release. Be patient, it will be worth it!
What is the new album about?
Dancette Pleasure: It´s about socks, drags and rock'n'roll.
I first caught up with you guys back in 2007 when I was writing for Glitzine, and back then I couldn't get the Hedwig comparison out of my head when I was listening to the likes of 'Mean Man Machine', but 'Oh Yeah' took that influence and ramped up your songwriting one million times over (in fact it sounds to me like Suede jamming with Sparks whilst trying to write their own version of Antichrist Superstar or Desolation Boulevard), how do you feel when you look back at 'Oh Yeah' three years on? Dancette Pleasure: Oh thank you for your comparison of our music. I love Suede and Hedwig by the way! I am still very proud of the 'Oh Yeah' album. To me it's not like that bubblegum music you chew once and then spit out and forget. But I must admit that I don't play our own records very much at home. I prefer to perform the songs life.
Disco Pleasure: I love that album even after all these years. All those different influences you talked about, are what make the record so special and unpredictable.
What was the idea behind the two CDs reflecting such dramatically contrasting aspects of The Pleasures music? (CD 1 by the way has been in my car stereo for ages). Was that an intentional yin and yang type thing going on there?
Dancette Pleasure: You just named the idea about it! Our music is not just like that hard rocking straight in your face music. It's also heart touching, fabulous, sensual and we had, back in 2006-2007 while doing the recording, tons of ideas in both directions. We found out that it would be hard to mix those styles on one album so we made that 'yin and yang' type out of it. We called the CDs 'Oh' like "oh how wonderful ("schmachtend")" and 'Yeah' like "yeah this kicks ass!"
The Dockyard 2 deal meant you then got a chance to put together the 'Oh Yeah Revolution' album in 2009, what was the idea behind that?
Disco Pleasure: It is basically a compilation of our favourite songs from the 'OH YEAH' double album. With Dockyard 2 we had the chance to distribute it international. But they also said, that no one would buy an expensive 2-disc set and we will pretty much have to downsize the album to a single-disc.
Playing live is a huge part of what The Pleasures do, so if you could put on your very own touring bill and take it around the world, who would be on the line up with you, and why?
Dancette Pleasure: A tour like that would start in Hamburg's Ballroom cause it was for many years kind of our live living room before it closed down. After some shows in Germany we would tour Italy because of the good food there. Then Sweden cause of the hottest girls and hairstyles, the rest of Europe, maybe a show in New York and Las Vegas to be the place near
If we were to do the random five tracks on the Pleasures' iPod/MP3 player right now what would come up?
Dancette Pleaure: I don´t like those MP3 players so I rather take my 1995 CD Walkman...here we go: ...wait..it has to start up and read the disc first.....'Some Like It Rock', 'Freedom', 'Skullhammer', 'Honeymoon In Venice' and 'When You´re Dead'.
And to finish things off is there anything you would like to share with your fans worldwide, like where do you guys want to be in say a year's time? Or in other words what's in store for us when The Pleasures' Revolution of Glam Rock gets in full swing?
Sensai Pleasure: I don't like guessing about the future. Easy logic: If you would have asked me one year ago, I would not in my dreams imagined the things that have happened till now, so how can guess what I could not even dream?
Dancette Pleasure: I don't know where we will be next year but I do know that we will be on tour in the UK this summer to rock your house down!
Dancette Pleasure: We thank you for your attention and with you in our crowd, we have the success we dreamed about in moisty nights.
