Opening with 'Modern Day Delilah' from their latest offering 'Sonic Boom', the final night of the UK leg of their European tour has just begun and they're off to a thunderous start. Big flames, even bigger bangs and a set list that had a fine smattering of songs old and new, the circus is in town, albeit maybe not quite as psycho as it once was. With more faces painted than not, the crowd are singing, screaming, clapping and at times reaching orgasmic waves of head banging. It's utterly enthralling and immensely humbling to be standing a few metres away from such long-standing legends and, all you Über Röck cynics out there, I can tell you right here, right now that "Paul Stanley is sounding phenomenal tonight!"
'Cold Gin', 'Crazy, Crazy Nights' and 'Calling Dr Love' follow and for me it then starts getting slightly monotonous with a little too much talking, but in true Kiss style, the stage show is just amazing. Stanley is propelled to the back of Wembley Arena in true Superman style; Eric Singer's gigantic drum kit rises towards the ceiling whilst Thayer and Simmons also go heaven bound during the show.
'Detroit Rock City' marks the end of the main set and my full attention is quickly back to where it should be - in the heart of rock 'n' roll. It's a show so far that I'm never going to forget visually. Aurally neither as it took a few days for the ringing in my ears to disappear, but what is going to stay with me for a lifetime, was an encore that Paul Stanley promised to be the longest encore ever. Well, it was long but it was what I had been waiting for. This was pure fucking Kiss, what we wanted, and what we got. Five timeless anthems one after the other with no time to breathe - 'Lick It Up', 'Shout It Out Loud' and 'I Was Made For Loving You' fly by, the latter containing a special moment that I will forever remember for missing. The Argent cover 'God Gave Rock 'n' Roll To You II' turns out to be an almost religious experience before the mighty cannons blow incredible amounts of ticker tape all the way to the back of the venue, as 'Rock And Roll All Nite' ends a storming, steamy set and the band leave with promises of returning again sometime soon.
