For those who don’t know her, Imelda May is an Irish singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Ahead of her forthcoming tour in support of her just-released ‘Life, Love, Flesh, Blood’ album, she performed a short series of three acoustic instore showcases, giving tasters from the release, which, since getting home from this in the series of shows in Manchester, has been played three times in its entirety back to back: I just can’t get enough of it!

As Imelda herself says of the album: “I put my heart and soul into it and it means the world to me. I can’t wait for you to hear it and I hope you relate to it and we can connect in some kind of way. I hope you enjoy it! Xx.”

She starts off her small set with ‘Call Me’: it’s a very intimate crowd here in Manchester but nonetheless everyone was drawn into this beautifully crafted performance, with such elegant vocals and beautifully crafted music which complimented each other so well.

Being lured into this completely entrapping performance she followed this with ‘Sixth Sense’ to which members of the crowd including children got up and danced along to the slow yet bouncy song.

Next up was my favourite song of her set, ‘When It’s My Time’: a very deep and touching song which takes us back to her roots, being very gospel. The words of this song very challenging, and sang with such passion: her rockabilly style has slowed and she is giving us a more emotive performance.

She finished her set with ‘The Girl I Used To Be’, which is a great finale to this short set: she has taken us through her journey, through each of the songs her journey has unfolded before us, an honest and open story of emotions which she has been through and the story, very deep and complex, takes us to where we are today, a sense of wholeness.

Imelda May with flawless vocals, so strong and powerful, presented so perfectly.

Having not seen or heard her music before she has a new fan in me.

‘Life, Love, Flesh, Blood’ is out now.

Imelda May’s latest UK tour kicks off in Ipswich on Thursday (4 May) and finishes in Belfast on 27 May.
