Taking to the stage first (but probably not openers for much longer judging by tonight's showing) and hailing from, in their words, Rhymney, Bargoed and Cardiff cometh Before The Escape. Kicking in with 'I'd be Lying If I Said' lifted off their new four track EP 'Here's To Looking Through You'. A slight comparison to LostProphets and possibly a hint of Biffy and springlings of emo but lots of attitude, potential and unity of their own on offer, even a bit of beatboxing from drummer Stefan on 'Castles', reverting back to his stool for the reminder of the tune 'Breathe', an almost, dare I say, Americanized sound, ending with the impressive 'Signs'. Keep the B4TE flag flying high, guys.
'This Is War' and this is The Long Knives, a tight musical unit featuring ex-members of Cusky. Vocalist/frontman/star turn Phil Carter moves to his own beat on stage or off amidst the bopping front row with the introduction of 'In Her Arms' as a love song. 'Rise Up', 'Her Eyes', 'Where Were You?' and 'Fall In' offer a lot of alternative intensity with Muse/Radiohead overtones even taking some time out to pay respect to the "Quality Theatre" and voicing his
And am I out of my depth but did they just cover or mention Justin Bieber????
4th Street Traffic's reputation is pumping full pelt at the moment in the motherland but tonight Uber Rockers they're taking to the EVI stage. 'Astray' is followed rapidly by the catchy and musically infectious 'Together We Stand', 'Friend Of Mine', 'If You Go' and 'Giving It Up' lifted off the quartet's mini album 'Kick The Habit'. They slow things down a notch for the Feeder-li
The young females surrounding the stage must mean it's time for headliners Eric Unseen. 'Pretty Petty', 'I'm The King', The View-esque, ever so likeable 'Goodnight Soho' ,a few covers thrown in for good measure including 'White Riot' and 'Parklife' where the crowd's movement is slightly reminiscent of 'Shaun Of The Dead'. 'Smile In The Face Of Adversity' slants towards The Libertines. "This is a song about sex" is the introduction to 'Sex And The City' while future single 'Meat And Razorblades' is an impressive little ditty - keep your ears to the ground for this one, Uber peeps - before rounding proceedings off with 'She's Coming Around' and a semi-genius snippet of 'Bat Out Of Hell' - I tip my invisible top hat to you young squires on that one. And heartfelt thanks to Uber Temp photo pitter Ashlea Matthews for the snaps and saving my bacon.
Good company, original live music, good beer; keep these nights flowing at the EVI, support it.
