Hot SnakesIt’s another winter’s night in Manchester, and where else would our resident gigaholic be but down the front at a gig in a hot and sweaty club… the only problem was, with some pretty fierce competition for audiences, which one would he go to? Well, the winners proved to be San Diego post-hardcore crue Hot Snakes, and you can find out if the big man made the right choice on the other side of the link:

Michale Graves CroppedAfter a previous solo tour was cancelled, Michale Graves finally ventured back on to British soil, 19 years after his last expedition here with The Misfits. For the opening night, he headed up north to Chester, so it seemed an ideal chance for our travelling gigaholic DJ to finally catch the man live. You can find out if the experience was worth the wait on the other side of this link:

Escape The Fate ManchesterScreamo is not something that normally appeals too much to our travelling gigaholic, but a combination of factors made him take that frequent trip down the M62 and brave the torrential rain on a Sunday night to team up with our newest recruit to catch Las Vegas quartet Escape The Fate when they pulled into Manchester as part of their jaunt around the Uber Kingdom of Rock ‘n’ Roll in support of their forthcoming new album, ‘I Am Human’. You can find out how he fared on the other side of this link:

Firewind tour headerIt was a first trip of the year over the hills to Sheffield for our travelling gigaholic DJ, to take him to see what promised to be an interesting line-up – and what turned out to be a rather eventful evening in the company of Greek power crue Firewind and two rather poorly members of German metal legends Rage… oh, and hometown heroes COP UK. David Ryder Prangley headerLike everyone here at the website that excites parts of your body others can’t even dream of tickling, our resident DJ firmly believes that you don't need worldwide names to make a good gig, just well-rehearsed, genuinely talented bands, who give everything and make it almost compulsory to attend… which is just what he did on the second night of his most recent sojourn in London town – even if the fates may not have quite been aligned in terms of his homebound travel arrangements, as you can find out on the other side of the link:

Motionless in White/Ice Nine Kills – Belfast, Mandela Hall – 15 January 2018 Print E-mail

Motionless In White BelfastHe may be one of the younger members of the UR team, but even Jonni D admitted to feeling a little out of touch when he failed to get down with the projectile-vomiting kids who flooded the floor of Belfast’s soon-to-be-demolished all-ages basement venue for the first night of the UK leg of a tour that promised a feast of face-painted gothic metalcore… Find out if our soldier of misfortune came out with nothing more than a few flesh wounds on the other side of the link:

Five Finger Death Punch/In Flames/Of Mice & Men – Birmingham, Arena - 17 December 2017 Print E-mail
Written by Rich Hobson
Saturday, 06 January 2018 04:40

Five Finger Death Punch GlasgowLike many of us, Five Finger Death Punch had a tough year in 2017. Between legal disputes, on-stage meltdowns and frontman Ivan Moody stepping back from the band, for a while it looked like the band’s fantastic Download Festival performance would be the last in the UK for a while – announced December tour or no. The build-up over the next six months played out like a “will they or won’t they?” as to whether or not we’d actually get to Birmingham Arena and catch hold of Moody and co, but come the appointed date the canals of Birmingham were abuzz with activity as fans gathered en masse for an evening of (literal) arena sized metal tunes… among them was Rich H:

Evil Blizzard/Ruts DC – Preston, 53 Degrees – 16 December 2017 Print E-mail
Written by DJ Astrocreep
Saturday, 06 January 2018 04:00

Evil Blizzard Preston posterOn many occasions, our resident DJ has attempted to describe Evil Blizzard to people, the most succinct comparison being that they sound like Hawkwind took a really bad acid trip and tried to write some punk songs, whilst they look like a cross between Slipknot and Led Zeppelin… Intrigued? So were we, which why we asked to tell us more about their end-of-year co-headline show with perennial ÜR faves Ruts DC:

36 Crazyfists GlasgowSpeaking to 36 Crazyfists’ frontman Brock Lindow before the show, it quickly became apparent to Rich H just how happy he was to be playing in Europe again. And why wouldn’t he be? The band had sold out several of their UK shows, pulling in the crowds eager to catch material from the latest record ‘Lanterns’ and see a well-stacked bill of great metalcore-and-beyond bands. Steel Panther/Wayward Sons – Belfast, Limelight 1 – 19 January 2018 Print E-mail
Written by Mark Ashby and The Dark Queen
Friday, 26 January 2018 04:40

Steel Panther BelfastHow many cheap, tacky, tasteless jokes about cocks, fannies and fucking can you cram into 90 minutes of what is supposed to be a heavy metal show? Apparently, as many as you want when you’re Steel fucking Panther. Resisting the urge to make a similarly inane crack about this being it being his virginal experience of SP in the flesh, Über boss Monk found it hard to distinguish if he was watching a rock gig interspersed with stand-up comedy routines or a comedy show punctuated by some (admittedly half decent) tunes when the LA glamsters rolled into Belfast on the second night of their current European jaunt, as he explains on the other side of this link:

Geoff Tate – London, The Garage – 15 January 2018 Print E-mail
Written by DJ Astrocreep
Tuesday, 23 January 2018 04:40

Geoff Tate BelfastApart from when it was toured on its first release, the opportunity to see an album as legendary as ‘Operation: Mindcrime’ performed in full, and by its original singer, is not one that comes along too often. When you add in the mix of a concept album and rock opera, you realise how few times this has actually been done before, meaning passing up the chance of seeing it performed live would be, in our resident DJ’s mind, just “silly”. So, click the link to find out what happened when he ventured down to London for the second time in four days to see Geoff Tate perform:

Watain sigilIt had been a quiet couple of weeks for our resident gigaholic, and it took him a bit longer than some other members of the UR team to break his 2018 live duck – and also a 500+ mile round trip from Liverpool to London and back. But, was it worth it? As ever, you can find out on the other side of the link:

Anti-Nowhere League/The Defects/Borrowed Time – London, The 100 Club – 5 January 2018 Print E-mail
Written by Jim Rowland

anwldefectsBack in the early ‘80s, a label called WXYZ Records released two cracking albums – Anti-Nowhere League’s ‘We Are …The League’ in 1982, and The Defects’ ‘Defective Breakdown’ the following year. Jim Rowland loved them both then, and still does today. Last weekend saw both bands back together on the same stage on the second night of this year’s Resolution Festival at Oxford Street’s legendary 100 Club venue - and our man was there like a rat up a drainpipe:

Written by DJ Astrocreep
Saturday, 06 January 2018 04:20

dio returns 5057355638There had been a lot of talk before the Dio Returns gig about the use of the Dio hologram with a live backing track for his vocals. Both sides were quite vociferous in their opinions, one arguing that he should be left to rest in peace, others saying they had never had the chance to see him live so this was as close as they could get. There were numerous counter-arguments to anything either side could put forward… we sent our resident DJ along with an open mind, and equally open ears and throat, and you find out what he thought right here:

Wolfsbane PontypoolEver since he joined the UR team last year, David O’Neill has spent a lot of time not only discovering the best in new music but also a lot of exciting stuff that he missed during years misspent doing other less important things!  The latest “blast from the past” to cross his aural radar are those rock ‘n’ rollers with more leather on their hides than the pigs that produce that other well-known export from Tamworth, the mighty Wolfsbane:

Fields Of The Nephilim – London, Kentish Town Forum – 22 December 2017 Print E-mail
Written by Jim Rowland
Tuesday, 02 January 2018 12:45

Fields Of The Nephilim posterThe stars may not have been quite aligned for goth legends Fields Of The Nephilim’s ‘Saturnalia’ winter solstice celebration this year - due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’ the show had to be moved back one day – but that did not dampen the spirits of the Nephilim faithful one bit, and they were out in force at Kentish Town’s Forum for the band’s only UK show of this year. Among them, was our very own man in flour-covered black, Jim Rowland:
