October Gigs
Today Is The Day/Fashion Week – Cheltenham, Frog and Fiddle - 5 October 2017 Print E-mail
Written by Rich Hobson
Sunday, 15 October 2017 04:40

Today Is The Today Cheltenham According to Rich Hobson, the UK has a long way to go, in terms of catching up with noise punk, and while the genre is finally (and thankfully) gaining a foothold over here, fans have to settle from visits from US bands who have ensured that it remains “an ever-present murky stain sitting between the worlds of metal and punk”. And so our resident expert in all things noisy Maine visionaries TITD, as he explains on the other side of this link:

Alter Bridge/As Lions – Belfast, Ulster Hall – 8 October 2017 Print E-mail
Written by Mark Ashby and The Dark Queen

Myles Kennedy Alter Bridge BelfastIt is very rarely, if ever, that any artist visits the same territory during a touring cycle – never mind the same town, or even the same venue, and within the space of less than four months. But, that’s exactly what Alter Bridge have just done on their most recent return to the Über Kingdom of Rock ‘n’ Roll.  Yep, as promised at the end of their debut visit to this particular corner of the Überverse, here they were again… for another sold out show. And, of course, the UR team were there (well, we had to be or Monk probably would have been getting divorce papers):

Alter Bridge & The Parallax Orchestra – London, The Royal Albert Hall – 3 October 2017 Print E-mail
Written by Rich Hobson
Saturday, 14 October 2017 04:00

Alter Bridge - Royal Albert HallJust four short months after their last visitation, Alter Bridge recently returned to the shores of the British Isles for a short run of dates that saw them, somewhat ambitiously, play a different set list on each of the five nights. In the first of a double header of reviews from this quick visit, Rich Hobson took a pew in the historic Royal Albert Hall for the second of two shows which saw them perform with The Parallax Orchestra:

All Them Witches/The Ghost Wolves – Birmingham, O2 Institute – 30 September 2017 Print E-mail
Written by Rich Hobson
Thursday, 12 October 2017 04:00

All Them WitchesRich Hobson reckons that Nashville’s All Them Witches are a band far beyond their years, sounding much more seasoned than their five years of history would suggest, moulded and shaped by the road, masters of their craft, their set an expansive and adventurous journey. Our boy down the front says they don’t have legs; they have a tour-bus and a sense of adventure which may yet take them to the ends of the earth and back – all we can do is join them on the way and enjoy the ride, which is just what he did when they pulled into Brum recently:

Life of Agony/Aaron Buchanan & The Cult Classics/Blood Runs Deep – Birmingham, O2 Institute – 22 September 2017 Print E-mail
Written by Rich Hobson
Monday, 09 October 2017 09:18

Life Of Agony BirminghamA band well used to facing up to adversity, it would take more than a disappointing turnout – perhaps attributable to two other quality gigs taking place in the same venue – to prevent Life of Agony from sending bodies crashing to the floor and proving once again why they remain one of the most creative and relevant bands in the otherwise muddied field by the name of ‘alt metal’. Click the link to find out what went down this fine evening:

Inglorious/ Wayward Sons – Pontypridd, Muni Arts Centre – 30 September 2017 Print E-mail
Written by David O'Neill
Sunday, 08 October 2017 04:20

IngloriousIt was going to be a hot night in the valleys for sure, when this double header of a tour forsook the usual hotspots of Cardiff and Swansea, instead heading to the more intimate environs of Pontypridd. Of course, Über Rock loves nothing more than heading off the beaten track in search of rock ‘n’ roll, and so David O’Neill headed to the converted church which was the unlikely setting for the return to Wales by these two rising stars of the British rock firmament:

Waterparks GlasgowIt’s a busy period for shows and tours at the moment, as evinced by the fact that UR’s crack team of reviewers are out virtually every night of the week at one gig or another up and down the length and breadth of the Über Kingdom of Rock ‘n’f’n Roll… Stepping up to the pit wall on this occasion was Hannah Reid, who swapped her DMs for her flip-flops and some fun down the Waterparks in Glasgow:

Danny VaughnHaving done so on every occasion in the past, there was no way The Dark Queen was going to miss this latest visit by one of her favourite singers to her little corner of the Überverse. So, the camera was checked and rechecked, the beers were ordered and the bus was boarded for the trip deep into the Antrim hills to get up close and personal on what proved to be an epic night, which started with Mr V getting caught up in a particularly Northern Ireland phenomenon. HRH SvD 2017Year two of HRH's Stoner vs Doom had a pretty big set of shoes to fill, but with the likes of Saint Vitus, Ten Foot Wizard, Truck Fighters and Kadavar playing, the bill looked like it could live up to the previous year's hype.  But did it?  The mysterious DJ Astrocreep ventured over the Pennines to team up with our Sheffield crue to find out – and so can you, on the other side of this link:

Papa Roach Glasgow 2017LA rap-rock pioneers Papa Roach recently returned to the Über Kingdom of Rock ‘n’ Roll (well, some of it anyway), is support of their acclaimed ‘Crooked Teeth’ album, which most agreed marked a return to form for the band. The Glasgow show was also being filmed for their upcoming new single release. Mayday Parade GlasgowFloridian indie rockers Mayday Parade probably picked a good time to hit the UK in support of the tenth anniversary of their ‘A Lesson In Romantics’ album, ripping up stages up and down the UK as Hurricane Irma was simultaneously ripping up their home state. We sent Hannah R along to catch up on the action as it went down on the Glasgow leg of the tour:

Living Colour BilstonPlaying on a miserable Wednesday night, in a small town just outside two major cities, the odds were against Living Colour. Yet, in what seems to be a recurrent theme for the band, they took one look at adversity and spat right in its face, putting on one of the best shows of the year, as Rich Hobson now elaborates:
