kingbluessincityWell it's Friday night, it's pissing down outside so what better thing to cheer you up than go to a rock 'n' roll show?

Tonight it was the turn of rising stars and political agitators who, as they are keen to point out, are 'Fucking Angry' and who can blame them? Right place at the right time? Maybe, but they have some pretty apt lyrics crammed onto their album-of-the-year bothering latest release 'Punk & Poetry'. Whilst the club isn't heaving it is fairly busy as the King Blues amble onto the stage and strap on their instruments and get straight down to business with 'Last Of The Dreamers' heading straight into 'We Are Fucking Angry'. Before there is time to take a breath it's headlong into 'Save The World, Get The Girl' and the band 's best track 'Hang The Landlord'.

Having opened with my favourite tracks in their repertoire I had a horrible feeling that they'd shot their bolt and what on earth were they going to do to raise the bar for the next 70 minutes.  Fear not pop pickers because this most excellent live band more than raised the bar - they fucking destroyed it by using the bar to smash the Daily Mail over its bigoted, racist head then turned on the poxy current incumbent of 10 Downing Street. Some people say there is no room for politics in music but punk has always been infused by politics, The Clash probably being one of the noticeable influences on The King Blues with their mish mash of styles, but above all it's the songs that stand up and are most definitely counted right the way to bands like the Pistols and way beyond. With the front five or six rows pogoing in unison and even managing at one point to pull off the one clap followed by the two quick clap with aplomb (try it you know what I mean) this didn't go unnoticed by the band who were noticeably impressed.

'Shooting Fascists' sounded great and how often do you get a ukulele solo at a live rock 'n' roll gig? Then it was time for audience sing along to the infectious 'Headbutt'. Don't know about Headbutt but this shit is the bomb and a most excellent evening's entertainment and a band who are most definitely in the groove right now having criss-crossed across the UK playing gig after gig and festival after festival. It's refreshing to hear a band voice their opinions in such a forthright manner, and all wrapped up in some fucking great music. 'Does Anbody Care About Us', 'The Streets Are Ours' were colossal as was the bouncing 'Mr Music Man' ; Clearly a band right at the top of their game right here, right now.

There were no Blues leaving Sin City tonight except that it was over for the time being. Hopefully the band will go away and write another album as strong as 'Punk & Poetry' and follow it up with more criss-crossing the venues of the UK. Itch is a compelling frontman and seems to have a heart as big as a dustbin lid. I wish them all the best and look forward to the next time. Open your minds people, stand up and be counted and get some King Blues into your lives. Respect is due to any band that manages to rhyme "Robson and Jerome" with "Saxon's Denim and Leather".

Oh before I wrap this up Itch managed a few words in Welsh so in return I'd like to say ' diolch am fawr cawn ni weld chi amser.  \m/ parch tangnef'
