Monkey 3‘The 5th Sun’ is album number four from Swiss psychedelic stoners Monkey3, and a fine effort it is too.

Dispensing with the idea of vocals completely, Monkey3 deal in huge, sweeping instrumentals fusing psychedelic stoner vibes with a healthy smattering of space rock and prog.

‘The 5th Sun’ offers seven tracks with plenty of light and shade, rock solid stoner grooves, catchy riffs and meandering guitar solos that are both tasteful and soulful, bringing to mind old school influences like Pink Floyd, with more modern influences like label mates My Sleeping Karma.

The epic opener ‘Icarus’ is a particular highlight, and the likes of ‘Suns’, ‘Birth Of Venus’, ‘Pintao’ and ‘Circles’ are huge sonic soundscapes that provide enough of those big stoner riffs and totally tripped-out spacey moments to suggest these Swiss stoners have been on something a bit stronger than a nice chunk of Emmental.
