1nirv2002This is truly inspirational, awe-inspiring stuff.  This is not anything new as the title makes quite clear but what this is, is a little bit of a history lesson. You see, long before there was a Swedish death metal scene, let alone the Stockholm or Gothenburg signature sounds, there was Nirvana 2002 (originally called Nirvana but then some Cobain bloke went and got all famous). Orvar Safstrom (who later joined Entombed briefly, singing on the 'Crawl' EP), Erik Qvick and Lars Henriksson have got a lot to answer for when it comes to genre defining tunes.

The likes of 'Slumber', 'Zombification', 'Brutality' and 'Awakening Of' make you realise what was in the water in Sweden in the late 80s to allow albums like 'Left Hand Path' to seemingly appear from nowhere. All the building blocks of the sound that would make Entombed, Dismember, Carnage and Unleashed flag-bearers of the Scandinavian death metal holocaust are here in their untamed, raw-as-fuck glory. Featuring virtually everything Nirvana 2002 recorded (there are some live songs omitted and a few recordings which got lost along the way) this really is an utterly essential purchase for anyone who loves death metal of any variety.  Remember what it was like when you first heard the Nihilist demos and you'll get the idea of the vibe these recordings generate.

Packaged with a great booklet telling the tales of the songs, featuring archive photos and notes by Orvar himself, as well as by Tomas Lindberg, this is a great package lovingly put together as only Relapse know how. As Mr Lindberg himself says "This stuff gives me the chills."  Buy or Die!!!
