They feel they're taking the piss and simply making money by being a 'joke' band but these types of bands are nothing new and have been around almost as long as the music it parodies: Spinal Tap, Dread Zeppelin, Hayseed Dixie, Richard Cheese, Lawnmower Deth - we've all had a chuckle and raised a glass to the sheer genius/stupidity of it all and you need to remember this when talking of Steel Panther. I think they nailed it so perfectly on their first album that many metalheads have forgotten this....
People are entitled to their opinions of course but the bottom line is that the band members have paid their dues trying to make that jump to stardom and have kept faith in this style of music and have simply 'cum' across a formula that works for them. The tongue firmly in cheek angle that us Brits surely invented with the likes of the Carry On films is the point to the whole package - they're in on it and that's the beauty of why it works. Don't take it too seriously - they don't. It's theatre, it's entertainment, it's '80s rock for fuck's sake so get naked, take your shaft in hand and just press play (Uber Ladies, you may grab a shaft of your choice).... So you know you're not getting Pantera, Kreator, Pearl Jam, Opeth or anything remotely new but what you are getting (again) is just the right portion of innuendo against the craft of shredding and catchy riffs and hooks. 'Balls Out' starts out with 'In The Future' which is a 'Shout At The Devil', 'In The Beginning' style intro that sets the tone for the first cut, 'Supersonic Sex Machin - a hi tempo ode to their good selves in the future (obviously ). 'Just Like Tiger Woods' will make you never take the sports star and golf seriously again such is the amount of double entendres that they produce - shaft, balls, grip, hole, putting from the rough etc, etc. I never said it was Shakespeare. 'Gold Digging Whore' has a great outro that will no doubt make the live shows and 'Critters' is so puerile that you just can't help but admire how the fuck they actually get away with it all?
Just like their live shows are renowned for guest appearances, Nickelback's Chad Kroeger and Nuno Bettencort are the stars that make a more than credible imprint on the track 'It Won't Suck Itself' (do I really have to tell you what it's about??) You either find all this an hilarious parody of the best music in the world or find titles such as 'That's What Girls Are For', 'Weenie Ride' and 'Let Me Cum In' a tedious bore. If that's the case, you're probably not even reading this? Songs about anal sex and getting your cock sucked whilst shooting pearly love notes all over some stripper are of course the basis for the whole album and although not as instantly catchy as many of their debut disc's songs, 'Balls Out' still has enough comedy from frontman Michael Starr and genius shredding from Satchel to make it worth a listen.
