...the answer is, pretty much all of it. I'll be honest and say that the fact that Liam Cormier of Cancer Bats guests on this EP piqued my interest but, after repeated listens, I'm happy to report that his throat only adds to the cool shit on offer here, rather than own it completely. Opener 'Can't Plan Regret' kicks the door of this release in with a hefty boot of a riff - think Cormier's day job meets Gallows and you'll be halfway there, but throw in a hook that generally takes the hardcore tag and places a 'post' in front of it : Four minutes of heavy duty excellence. Second track 'Sailing Out To Fail' is built around a huge hook but, as soon as the yobbish gang vocals kick off and Cormier's terror tonsils make an appearance, this song curls itself into a fist and throws a fat, almost retro, riff at the speakers. Third and final track 'Hindenburg' drops like a clubfooted trapeze artist and hits the ground with a huge crash of heaving guitar, ending the EP in fine fashion.
Available from all good digital outlets, and some bad ones, at the end of November, 'Sailing On A Broken Compass' could find a place in the music collections of many, not just Cancer Bats completists. Well worth a listen or two.
