It seems a long, long time ago that Butch Walker put a whole host of new material up on his Myspace profile in demo form, with (the then fully-titled) 'Here Comes The Heartache' being a superior slice of sentimentality that you just knew would be massive in its finished form. How right that thought was.
When uber pop star Pink, owner of one of the finest female voices on this planet, turned up with an uncredited vocal performance on 'Song Without A Chorus' from 'The Rise And Fall Of Butch Walker & The Let's-Go-Out-Tonites', you kinda got the feeling that if only Walker had pushed the hell out of her appearance then he might actually break free of the shackles of being one of the World's best kept musical secrets. Massively talented as a producer yet criminally under appreciated as a performer in his own right, this was one cult artist who deserved a little more exposure. Yet when album 'Sycamore Meadows' was released, Pink's appearance was yet again down played; sure, us fans knew.....but what about everyone else?!
Finally, Pink's appearance got some copy and the song - oh man, what a song - went straight to number 1 in the Hot 100 in the US. And what about that awesome live performance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show? Almost as cool as seeing Marvelous 3 throwing shapes and guitar picks on Conan all those years ago.
'Here Comes The...' was not only the perfect song to break Butch, but also to break hearts. The demo version of the song which, incidentally, wraps up this four track set, tugged at the old heart strings but the finished version severs them. Pink's soulful vocals are the perfect compliment to Walker's emotional delivery. Want a song to raise the hairs on your arms and a lump in your throat? Look no further. Pretty much perfect.
The EP also features two previously unreleased tracks that any Butch Walker fan knows will be better than 90% of all other songs out there! 'Teenage Lust' is another of those subtle Walker tunes that fuses lyrical storytelling to loose Americana, while 'I Just Want You To Want This Again' is a stripped down acoustic number that will have listeners thinking about long lost love.
The only thing that could make this EP better would be to see it for sale on the merch stand at several UK tour dates - let's hope that talk of a proposed Autumn tour of this fair isle isn't just that.
