Midlands based stoner doom metallers Alunah also have the ability to stick out n your collection not just because this 2009 release was available on the 10" format, but also due to the fact they have a pretty unique and cool vibe going on throughout this EP's grooves.
The four piece who formed back in 2006 do have something of a unique selling point. That being in this usually male dominated genre they fly in the face of fashion with a female vocalist/guitarist, and by heck if Sophie doesn't do a fantastic job. Boasting four tracks of down tuned juggernaut rifferama it is actually Sophie's light and shade vocals (which oddly remind me of that time a decade or so ago when L7 were everywhere you looked) that make me keen to hear the band's soon to be released 'Call of Avernus' full-length debut.
If I were to single out one track on here that sums up exactly what I love about this genre of music it has to be EP opener 'Spend My Time', which is as heavy as a herd of elephants yet manages to lift you out of your daily grind to a world of never ending musical happiness via a trippy lead vocal.
I guess right about now you're now wondering why I'm reviewing a release that is around twelve months old. Well, Alunah took the time to send us this fantastic 10" personally ahead of their upcoming album, so the least we can do to repay that DIY ethic is by making you guys aware of another cool band you might want to tell the world about.
If you like bands like Goatsnake, Down, The Lunachicks and Candlemass you'll love Alunah.... Check 'em out, and while your there, tell 'em Uber Rock sent you.
