serialobsession-10Serial Obsession are a New York based band formed in 2006 who, a year later, recorded a 6-song self-released EP called 'Sexy But Useless'. Now they have followed this with the full-length 'Shotgun Opera' as part of their plan for world and radio domination.

Opening track 'All The Way' is straight from the school of Velvet Revolver - but a little bit more radio ready - but lacking the edge and dirtiness mainly due to the polished finish in the production which provides a rock sound made for day time radio. The vocals of Shawn Sugrue are at times too Bono sounding although a point of interest if you ever wanted to know how a hard rock band fronted by Bono would sound, this is highlighted on 'Edge Of The Blade'. This is a band with the melodies already in place for the radio and with their sights set on the arenas competing with the likes of your Bon Jovis, Extremes, Bryan Adams and even Stereophonics which I fear is a shame because there is a real dirty, middle-finger-in-the-air rock band bursting to get out of the polish cupboard here who can obviously write a decent tune.

This is a solid album full of melodic hard rock with hooks and riffs aplenty, as 'I Can't Believe' demonstrates, and with the luck of the playlists in corporate land they could well be all over our office radios at some point in the near future. There's a good mix of classic and modern rock, a good solid production, good song writing but for me it's missing any sign of danger and is all too safe.
