'In Progress' is the second long play release from Swedish trio Work Of Art, the follow-up to 2008's 'Art Work'. Here comes 'The Rain' and it grabs hold of your attention with immediate effect, a bouncing riff beneath a glorious vocal melody. 'Nature Of The Game' lifts me back to the good ol' days of the likes of Bonfire and the Stage Dolls and, like the opening tune, has a lovely little guitar break of sorts from guitarist Robert Sall, who also multi-tasks as keyboardist. 'Once Again' is well assembled but for me lacks that final knock down punch, although it does possess a decent keyboard solo moment and yet more neat six string work. 'Never Love Again' and 'Eye Of The Storm' are well produced album tracks at best but it does throw out a hook, so who knows who'll catch on - stay tuned.
The boys' balladry skills are called upon on 'Until You Believe' which, quite honestly, doesn't blow me away - not to say it isn't well structured - I can see the appeal this may have to many. A rather big, deep keyboard intro kicks up 'The Great Fall', a bounding romp of riffage and melody all wrapped around a memorable hook of a chorus. 'Call On Me' loses itself just ever so slightly within itself unfortunately. 'Emelie' has a fine vocal performance delivered by Lars Surfsund and I really should mention while I'm at it drummer Herman Furin who remains solid throughout. 'Fall Down' is piano led but, whilst they have this smooth production and great musicianship, the tune goes nowhere fast. 'Castaway' - now it's time to pick up the acoustic from the corner of the room for the underlying of this particular song....but it soon turns to a full-on rocker. Still those fab melodies continue, a nice swirling keyboard piece introduces us to 'One Step Away', the final piece of the 'In Progress' jigsaw.
A great smooth production, able musicianship, top harmonies etc, etc... and if you're into your melodic American orientated rock (or whatever it's referred to as) give it a spin. Work Of Art? Only time will tell.....
