'All I Want To Do' is a fantastic opener, frantically paced and with buzzy guitars from the off it reminds me off a more sugary Towers Of London. The chorus sees Dukey chanting "Life is cruel, Religion sucks and all I want to do is dance" - it may be a new slogan for a generation of despondent teenagers and, with a killer chorus, we could be in for something good here. They say first impressions last and Top Buzzer definitely make a good start. 'Wake Up Call' again is sugar-coated pop punk and catchy, as is single 'Remission', a three minute account of the end of a relationship, but not in anyway is it a downer, in fact the whole album is tremendously upbeat throughout.
Top Buzzer are a band that understand the importance of a catchy chorus as songs like 'No More Yesterdays' and 'You're So Good You're Great' show. The lyrics are mostly tongue in cheek, about as deep as a shallow puddle. Like 'She's Not Wearing Any', which is not about a girl who forgot to wear her glasses, and 'When I Look At You' which has the immortal chorus "When I look at you all I think about is sex, and when I talk to you I think about it more", lyrics that could've been written by a 14 year old boy that veer dangerously close to Bloodhound Gang territory. But there's nothing wrong with that, sometimes that's all you need. Hell, it worked for Kiss!
Included is a cover of M's 'Pop Muzik' that fits their style well, it's a pretty quirky version played at a fast pace that I am sure would go down well live.
They would have fitted in well with the late 90s Brit Rock scene, they mix elements of indie tuneage with quirky pop punk, I hear hints of The Wonderstuff, Baby Chaos and Grand Theft Audio (remember them anyone?). The melodies are good and memorable, the arrangements simple and to the point.
My overall impression on first listen was that it is all a bit sugary sweet, I was expecting it to have a bit more balls, but they have enough instant sounding songs to draw the listener back for repeated plays. After several listens and with plenty of catchy choruses now embedded in my brain I must admit that Top Buzzer are exactly that, a top buzz!
My search for a replacement Wildhearts will continue, but for now 'Outside Is A World' is a welcome distraction from a new band that you should really go check out.
