groover-von-kruger-deus-ex-machinaWhere do you start with this little gem of an EP? After slipping it into the system, what's the first thing that hits these battered ears? Bootsy Collins, yep a space base intro in line with the best of Funkadelic before we drop into a track that would not be out of place on Zodiac Mindwarp, the original high priest of love's debut LP - the track, for your info, is 'Nazi On A Bike'.

Track two glides in, again bass leading us into an Eastern themed guitar bringing out a very 70s Mahavishnu Orchestra feel, the shame is that it's instrumental and too short. Track three then stops you in your tracks harkening back to prime time Iggy, or from slightly earlier the MC5 - 'Guilty As Charged' is pretty apt, definitely guilty of a bit of prime plagiarism, but a stormer none the less.

The "Groover", I kid you not, on bass brings in track four, 'No Shoes', and we're slowed, mimicking a sub Morrison drawl, without the Doors' light and shade, but the bass leads and it's right on the money, outlining a good exercise in how to play funk bass. As it develops the guitarist shows his worth and it finishes with a cracking solo.

This leads us into the final track 'Escape Velocity', instrumental again, with the bass to the fore, but keyboards filling out the 70s vibe.

Looking at the press release I would have never pinned them as Australian, to these ears two great bands came out of Australia and one of them was INXS. Caught in a jazz influenced time warp definitely, but fair play the "Groover" can play.
