'Beat Oven' is a dark, emotive choice of opener as the ambient sounds soothe your senses before being kicked into life with a riff that shows how hard the band have worked to find their groove. 'Sugerglass' highlights the sonic tapestry guitarist Clarky, bassist Rhys and drummer Nick weave into your senses and removes all traces of anything that was there before and stays there for a lifetime.
Highlights include 'Fingered' which starts off with an almost military backbeat and follows up with a guitar riff from hell. It also includes the awesome lyric of "Don't tell me where to lay my bed, or I will finger you instead..." - it is lyrics likes these that give Blue Gillespie their edge over their peers and, mixed with despair, something special happens.
'Black Waltz' struts in with a swirling minimalist backing before ripping into a heavy back beat. Yes, there are speckles of a heavy Nick Drake but mixed with the almighty beast of Deftones and Tool to great effect.
The stoner rock which Blue Gillespie dip their toes in is clearly a rock fan's dream as they do so with the confidence of a band much older than their years. With the lyrics from 'Tripout' - "Tripping my tits out, Ripping your bliss out, Sucking your nips out, Working your bits out" - the band show their youthfulness but, with time, I honestly believe they will become their own masters.
Blue Gillespie have clearly found what works for them and highlight their strengths. Given that Clarky was taught by Onslaught's Alan Jordan, and went on to become his guitar tech, his playing has the feel of Onslaught but with a more defined sound making it his own.
'Synesthesia' is one hell of a debut album and will be looking to appear in my album of the year list with no problems at all.
