Violent_Soho_CoverWith songs and a band name firmly influenced by the Northern Hemisphere of our great planet of rock, you'd be forgive for thinking that four piece grunge power poppers Violent Soho originated from New York or perhaps London, but no they actually hail from Brisbane, Australia.

This gig-only two track seven inch actually hit ÜRHQ through the back door not our usual PO Box, via a two track download I just happened upon via the band's UK PR company. But the digital sounds that emerged were so impressive that I thought "what the fuck, you guys should hear this", so excuse me PR guys if I'm not actually supposed to be reviewing this.

Formed in 2004, Violent Soho are the sound of a band kicking the trend and writing spiky (sub) pop rock with "hit" written all over it. Lead track 'Son Of Sam' is the sort of three-minute anthem Billy Corgan would once have written before he disappeared into the O in his Zero T shirt.  This is catchy stuff, being just hip enough to garner the attention of the now thirty somethings once again lamenting the untimely passing of a certain cardigan wearing singer/guitarist.

The B-side 'Bombs Over Broadway' is for me the better of the two tracks on offer, being a caustic mix of The Pixies, with its chugging verse, before breaking into the type of riotous chorus that fellow countrymen The Living End have made their trademark. This is one hell of way to leave me thinking, "where do I get the album?"

Check out the band's Myspace below and see what you think. Me I'm off to try and find a mate in Australia who can get me a copy of the Orange Vinyl LP...Nice!!!!
