herculesExploding out of the East German city of Jena, a city almost made famous for its passing intellectuals and for an example of GDR monolithic construction, are the delightfully quirky Hercules Propaganda. Doing their communist predecessors proud by sending up the American flag alongside all sorts of other symbols of Western seduction, the mish-mash of the EP artwork for 'O Mother Of Mighty Muscle' goes some distance in mirroring the unpredictability of their music. Although I imagine they would rather indulge in this seduction somewhat more freely than old Honecker would have done.

Formed in 2010, this high-energy, mind boggling rock 'n' roll band have their iron foot resting firmly on the pedal. They are a loud, raucous, space riding beast of noise. From the heavy-riffing opener of 'Against The Odds' through the marching onslaught of 'Summoning The Devil', to closer 'Hercules Propaganda', the band occupy those same cosmic heights as spaced out rockers Monster Magnet. There are moments of Kyuss, there are moments of Motorhead (check out the bass riff in the opener or the opening riff of 'Getting High'). In fact there are moments of all kinds of hectic rock 'n' roll that pick you up and don't let you go for a moment. The more I listen to it the more bands I think of whose fans might find something for them in 'O Mother Of Mighty Muscle'.

Try mixing the craziness of Anti-Product with the fantasy of Hawkwind and see how you feel. Thrashed-up and experimental, the EP also demonstrates some great musical composure with cranked-up guitars free to roam all over the record. 'O Mother Of Muscle' rides the highway between rock and metal, taking detours where it sees fit. So if you fancy immersing your head in boiling stew of influences, get cooking with Hercules Propaganda.
