breakerscoverfinal2_1Copenhagen's The Breakers are smooth. They are so smooth that anything they do melds together like melted chocolate. Effortlessly they carry the tradition of the soul-inspired rock 'n' roll of yester-year's pioneers Small Faces and the Rolling Stones, whilst energetically implanting a sound so fresh that there is little room for cynical "seen it all before" comparisons. So who the hell are they and where did they come from?

Formed in 2002, The Breakers' self titled album, set to be released on 11 July 2011, is in fact their third. After their two previous albums, 'What I Want' (2004) and 'Here For A Laugh' (2006), The Breakers' successes grew. Working on the back of excellent reviews and support from college and commercial radio, Little Steven Van Zandt snapped them up for his record company Wicked Cool Records in 2008. The result is 12 tracks of swaggering style, produced by Van Zandt, with the man himself co-writing many of the songs.

Opener, 'Start The Show', does just that. It is up-beat, exciting and classic. It captures a true spirit of low-slung rock 'n' roll that is natural and cannot be learned. Once again the Scandinavians have produced a band that is at once worth listening to whilst also staying true to a particular spirit. I won't pretend that this is something wholly original, ready to spark a new wave of rock 'n' roll music. But it is full of passion and belief in a way that forces you to listen. With songs such as the singles 'The Jerry Lee Symptoms' and 'Riot Act' alongside other thumping tunes such as 'Temptations', this is a hats-off to their forbears whilst doing it their own way, and for their own reasons.

Just playing the rock 'n' roll is one thing. Adding the soul to it is another. And this is what clearly identifies The Breakers as something special. Brimming with hints of Motown and swing, this rock 'n' roll band provide a lesson in cutting the rug. Just check out 'Rainy Day', or 'Soulfire' and let the sounds carry you away. And at the end of the night pour yourself a bourbon and kick back to album closer 'Forever's A Long Time Gone'.

The Breakers have just kicked off a European tour and will make an appearance at Hard Rock Calling on Saturday June 25, so make sure to catch them there, or hope that they will be making more appearances in the UK soon.

Like a sponge, The Breakers have soaked up everything they love about music and are now squeezing out the sweet tastes for all to enjoy, and I'm drenched!
