How some bands get a shot at the big time and others get lost floundering in the wasteland of the pub circuit will always be a mystery to most of us - the fact that Sweet Ether have self-financed this, their second EP, along with their current tour, with no help from anyone is testament to the spirit and belief that lies within our rock world.
This Brighton based four piece really nail the Seattle sound from 20 years ago (yes, it was that long ago!) whilst keeping their own identity throughout the five tracks on offer. Certainly not copyists but definitely fans of all things heavy grunge (think 'Louder Than Love' rather than 'Superunknown', think 'Bleach' rather than 'Nevermind') - You'll not be disappointed.
Opening track 'Black Clouds' swirls up and down through the emotions, track two 'Mannequin' follows suit and ploughs the same furrow and, with singer Riggs, who has the controlled power and range in his voice, they make you instantly take notice. 'Like Clockwork' is a brooding song that gives off a haunting AIC vibe whilst 'Screaming Jesus Christ' and the title track bully the senses into heaviness and groove that'll make you want more than the five tracks on offer here (Check out their debut EP for more of the same).
Having witnessed them live at a recent Black Spiders gig, they deliver the goods equally well on stage as in the studio. Driving riffs, melodic heaviness and a reminder of an era that often gets forgotten outside of the famous four.
Dig out your checked shirt, then check out whatever digs they're playing at.
