jonahtony200You may have already heard Surrey-based Stagecoach without realising it. They have had tracks appearing in Gavin & Stacey, series two of Skins and also featured in the trailer for recent British comedy Killing Bono. Here we have their new AA single 'Jonah Lomu/Tony Hawk', seemingly a tribute to these two sporting legends.

'Jonah Lomu' rides in like a summer breeze, all "woo woos", a perfect slice of power pop, the raspy vocals of Luke Barham giving it a nice edge. A song about school bullies that has nothing to do with Jonah Lomu or rugby, but what the hell! It's catchy and infectious, a mixture of The Senseless Things and Weezer, pure 90s indie pop.

'Tony Hawk' is a dig at privileged kids who waste their opportunities in education and sit at home all day getting stoned and playing Tony Hawk on Playstation. Again it's catchy, more "woo woos" which is always good, hints of The Replacements here and there and another fine tune worth wrapping around the ears.

All in all two uplifting tunes from a band that have something good to offer. Feeling down in the dumps? The state of the world getting you down? Listening to Stagecoach may just brighten up your day.

They describe themselves as "Power pop for BMX kids" and that is a pretty fair description and, with the backing of Radio 1's Huw Stephens who has given them extensive airplay, the future sure looks good for them. I look forward to hearing more from them.

Touring through May and June, Stagecoach are a band well worth checking out, and their brand of power pop is one to watch for in the future.
