'The Body Of Christ And The Legs Of Tina Turner' is their fabulously titled second album, already nominated for Irish Album of the Year. With Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill handling production duties and promise of some jangly, indie punk pop, I am hoping the actual songs are as imaginative as their titles suggest. I must admit to being slightly apprehensive on opening the booklet to discover a serious lack of any guitarist amongst the band members; two keyboard players, bass and drums...mmmm...not the usual combination for indie pop punk.
My worries are soon forgotten as opener 'Come On, Let's Talk About Our Feelings' grabs me with its instant catchy hook, keyboard stabs and gang backing vocals. Vocalist MayKay has a sweet voice that has a bit of an edge when called for (she swears more than Axl!), part Debbie Harry part Aimee Echo (what happened to her?).
New single 'Jenny Kelly' is a tribute to the heroine of Aussie low-budget sci-fi series 'The Girl From Tomorrow' and is a fine slice of sugary punk/pop, catchy and quirky. At just under three minutes it's the perfect summer single with its combination of pop melody, swathes of keyboard and fuzzbox. 'Pull Off Your Arms And Let's Play in Your Blood' bitches about childhood friends in the most brilliant way, like you would as a child; "My well read friends informed me that I was a cunt, well it's her own cunting problem, it's not my problem." The lyrics written by MayKay and fellow keyboards/vocalist Pockets are clever, bitchy and almost child-like in their honesty.
They mix in clips from old movies to good effect, such as 'Waking Up With Robocop' which sees MayKay and Pockets share vocals sounding like Belly meets The Violent Femmes. 'Indie Monster' is again abusive, in a comedy way to some poor individual; "I see you stalk around nightclubs, with your ridiculous head" and "You Indie Monster you've got a shrunken head, Stop breathing I want you dead." They claim their lyrics are mainly factual and based on one person who has broken each of their hearts.
Fight Like Apes merge elements of 90s indie music with 21st century pop sensibilities. 'The Body of Christ...' is original, odd, abrasive pop music and quite loveable. With a formidable live reputation, you should do yourself a favour and check them out touring the UK in May.
