Cock Sparrer - ForeverBoy, was I happy when this turned up in my inbox. I, like many uninitiated others, up until two years ago had listened to very little by the band: the odd track in various places; the times when you remember the track it’s bouncing around your brain but fucked if you remember the band. A trip to Rebellion in Amsterdam soon sorted that out and, fair play, they took the roof off the place, which they have done consistently every where they have played. The result? My bank balance getting a pounding and the full collection duly purchased.

My review on this very site talked more about watching a classy rock and roll band, putting on a tight professional show with one of the most rabid crowds I’d ever witnessed, but with everyone looking after everyone else, becoming part of the Sparrer Family, really pushing the all for one mentality, through anthem after anthem.

So let’s not label them anything but great music, with an acknowledgement to their history and a nod to the past - the fact that they’ve been acknowledged as the most influential street punk band of all time: the band that really pushed the Oi movement into the mainstream.

Listening through the back catalogue you can pick up the grounding, that anthemic pub rock/R&B circa Slade/Dr Feelgood, but all delivered with an updated punk edge. One of those facts that you just remember is that Dan Hardy, the UFC fighter, walked out to ‘England Belongs To Me’! Talk about attitude.

So what does ‘Forever’ give us? Let’s show a bit of respect here: this is a proper tasty offering from the Sparrer guys. Opener ‘One by One’ sets you up, and by second track in ‘Believe’ your bouncing around the room. It just doesn’t draw breath: those anthems just keep coming - and I for one can’t wait to catch them on the sell-out autumn tour. I can’t wait to see how the new stuff sits alongside the old, and if I had to pick a track that is going to become a serious contender for track of the night it’s going to be ‘Every Step Of The Way’… I can feel the atmosphere and hear the crowd singing along already.

There’s an almost Buzzcocks-like guitar intro to ‘Somebody’s Brother, Somebody’s Son’, before Colin tells the story that's sadly become almost commonplace pitching a nod at a life missed. ‘Up With This’ again tears the genre a new one: fast, intense and insistently grounded in attitude.

My other thought is that the LP closer, ‘We’re The Good Guys’ is gonna replace ‘England Belongs To Me’ – well, maybe just in Wales?

What a fuckin’ LP: not a weak track present. Do we still Über approve things? Let’s do it - in triplicate: LP of the year so far! What an entry into the Sparrer legacy. The working class struggles and stories really fitting into our fucked up political landscape.

‘Forever’ is released on Friday 2 June. You can buy your copy HERE.
