Well well, who'd have thought that after all this time we'd be seeing a brand new Jason and the Scorchers album in 2010. Well, believe it people because it's here and what a stonker it is too.
'Halcyon Times' kicks off with 'Moonshine Guy/Releasing Celtic Prisoners' and sounds like Ginger had more than a spiritual hand in this record because it sounds like it could easily have been penned by Mr Wildheart. With a bit of an all-star cast taking turns to play and write on this record you get the feeling of variety and a texture to the songs; from the mellow meandering of 'Beat On The Mountain' to the balls-out rocker that has a little bit of Dan Baird in there somewhere and, although he does make an appearance on this record, it's not on this one funnily enough.
Über Röck's friend, workaholic and fantastically named Pontus Snibb lays down the back beat in the engine room of the Scorchers whilst Warner E. Hodges definitely has the fire in his fingers and must have struck some deal with Beelzebub himself because the axe work is blistering in all the right places.
An album with light and shade, there's something for everyone in this nicely packaged gatefold card sleeve with a decent sized booklet containing some quality sleeve notes from the band and collaborators like Baird and Ginger. Highlights are aplenty but worthy of a mention has to be 'Mother Of Greed' - achingly good mid paced ramble. 'Getting Nowhere Fast' is exactly what I'd expect from a Jason and the Scorchers album. 'Land Of The Free' .... God damn it! I'd be here all night babbling on about what stands out because this 14 song collection is a tour de force and a cd you should have in your collection. No doubt about it this will get in a top 10 albums of the year already. Absolute Class! There is nothing more I can say other than rush out and get yourself a copy, right .........now!
