bonappetiteOver on the Uber Rock Soldiers forum we've recently been discussing the pros and cons of cover versions on albums, and also the wonderful conundrum that is cover version albums. Me, I'm of the mindset that if a band does something different with a song and does it well, then that is what a cover version is all about.

So when this oddly titled 'Bon Appetite Volume 2' three track download appeared for me to review I was hoping that with pedigree bands and musicians like Helix and (ex MSG and Ted Nugent singer) Derek St Holmes on show this was going to be a little more than a simple AC/DC by numbers workout.

And thankfully it is to some degree, as Helix manage to make 'It's A Long Way To The Top' sound like Saxon, whilst Ford T make 'Sin City' sound like Bonfire before Derek St Holmes manages to make Brian Johnson sound like Brian Howe via a way too smooth version of 'You Shook Me All Night Long'.

But quite what the purpose of 'Bon Appetite Volume 2' as a product is all about, is frankly beyond me, as it's hardly an essential purchase even if you are a diehard fan of any of the bands featured here. And even stranger given the release's title, that a song not even from the classic Bon Scott era of AC/DC makes an appearance.

If you are a diehard fan or just plain intrigued you can purchase this EP direct from iTunes here.
