In honour of the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, who shares her birthday with Jimmy Page, David Johansen and Phil Lewis (yes, this is a desperate attempt to make her sound cooler), the record's cover art is a pseudo-patriotic piece of work that certainly goes in search of chuckles, generally finding them. Well, they did here.
This release features the first material to be released by Hawk Eyes since they changed their name from Chickenhawk. The band's great 'Modern Bodies' album (released last November) really put them at the front of the ones-most-likely list and 'Yes, Have Some', the track featured here, will not change that. The band are amongst the brightest hopes for the future of noisy UK-created music and I await further developments keenly.
Dolphins, featuring former members of This Et Al, open the record with 'Escape', a powerful slice of fuzzed-out hardcore that does the business and wipes its dick on the curtains in under two minutes. Leeds noisesters Blacklisters unleash 'Club Foot By Kasabian' which, believe it or not, is not a straight forward cover version of...er...'Club Foot' by Kasabian. It is a furious fucker of a tune though from a band that deserve to be investigated further. Castrovalva, named after the first Doctor Who story arc to feature Peter Davison (yes, this was a desperate attempt to....umm...okay, maybe not), are described as 'Noise Hop' and I can't argue with that. Their song, 'Senorita', is an immensely catchy mash-up of electro dance music and rock and, while that genre fusion might not have got me running to the discotheque in the past, this shit is pretty special and does, I guess, what split records are all about, introduce the listener to bands that they would never have checked out previously.
In that sense this release works perfectly; four cools bands from a couple of labels who are littered with coolness, and with a black streak of anarchy coursing through their veins. Well worth adding to your collection.
