What a wonderful thing it is when you happen across a band that embraces the true spirit of rock 'n' roll; a vintage that was practised many moons ago by the good and the great, The Rolling Stones and The Faces to namedrop two. With arrangments that are authentic and on the money, The Booze have dished up, on 'At Maximum Volume', a sound that makes me think Primal Scream around the time of 'Rocks'. You've got hammond and clanging guitars with some delicious arrangements, like on 'Long Way Down' with its lazy delivery and crushing melody; simple yet totally engaging.
Eleven tracks full to the brim of great melodies and arrangements, this is a great sounding record with plenty of room in the tracks for the songs to breath and grow. 'Down On Your Luck' has the guitars exchanging licks between slide and soloing with some tambourine and organ thrown into the mix for good measure. You can imagine a band like The Booze tearing it up at the rock 'n' roll show and delivering a set that will have an audience eating out of the palm of their hand, just try out 'The Scene' for size as it rocks and rolls to its conclusion. There's something familiar about the sound but so what, these boys are down with the timeless good time music and, as it blasts out of the stereo, 'Straight To Hell' delivers the good and sounds like the best rock 'n' roll party in ages; "life's too short, anyway I'm going straight to hell!" - you tell 'em boys. The album takes a breather when 'New York City Woman' wheezes in with its harmonica and 'Exile'-esque drawl - it might be heavily influenced by the Stones but so what, if you're gonna be influenced by anyone it might as well be the best.
If you're looking for some good time rock 'n' roll then look no further, The Booze have got exactly what you want - just check out the riffing and "whoo-woos" on 'Derailed And Doublecrossed' - it'll have you nodding in agreement that this is where it's at. Light and shade a plenty with a bunch of great songs, played well, all wrapped up in a great production. I'm loving The Booze and so should you! Sharing the same label as fellow Atlanta cool cats the Biters there must be something in the waterthere because this shit rocks! Rock and roll is dead? My arse it is!
