London four-piece Knievel Genius are picking up fans and plaudits aplenty at the moment and although there's no stand out brilliance for me - not yet anyway - if you like the alternative, emo sounds of the rock world then you'll be digging this. Think Therapy?, Slaves To Gravity and a mild version of At The Drive-In and you'll see that this bunch of riff shitting fuckers are far from the pop produced clarity of most of today's youth system.
Cons: 'Execution' and 'Down With The Fairies' are jaunty, angular stabs of rock that will have a broader appeal than you would first imagine - I'm imagining the twenty somethings who are now bored of MCR or 30 Seconds To Mars moving on to the slightly heavier, punkier sound of Knievel Genius.
Possibly the best song title of the year follows: 'Beef Mustaine' - fuck knows what it's about but it gets an extra point for that title alone! 'Houdini Pt.1' slows the pace yet keeps the listener guessing as to which way it will exactly go before 'Shoot From The Hip, Baby!' ups the stakes and turns the band into an almost Indie sounding outfit, which for them really works.
Knievel Genius have created a sound that not only covers a lot of ground but also one that makes them sound like themselves and certainly not just the usual hero worship copyists that flood the market. It's got big hooks, big riffs and potential...
Inertia has not killed these youths, don't let it kill you.
