Well if I had to categorise World Secret I honestly couldn't, but then do we really need to pigeonhole everything we review? Most importantly I think is do I actually like what I hear? Well the answer is a mighty "fuck yes", as 'World Secret' is chock full of nihilistic lyrics, sublime hints of Depeche Mode, a little bit of current URHQ darlings Field Music, plus Bowie style inflection on some tracks and let's not forget the Pink Floyd-esque background to others (don't let that put you off though as they fit perfectly!!). For the rock heads amongst us there are also some cracking guitar solos (just enough, and not too much) to keep us looking toward the next musical twist and turn.
Listening to 'World Secret' just poses a question to me, "why are record companies pushing bands such as White Lies and Two Door Cinema Club so hard, when World Secret are having to release albums of this quality themselves?" It just doesn't make sense as it is to fans of those bands that this debut record will appeal, the only difference being that this is streets ahead! Seriously 'World Secret' is full of ideas, invention and is just sheer class.
Lyrically this is also one of the strongest albums I've heard in a very long time, musically one of the most exhilarating and technically spot on.
There are some absolutely killer tracks on this album, and absolutely no fillers. Stand outs for me are 'Hey Little Piggy', 'Hideaway Girl', 'Theme For Unknown Soldiers', 'Judge And Jury' and 'World Secret'. If I'd got this CD earlier 'World Secret' would have easily have been my album of 2011 (it was released back in September of last year) but as it is that I've only just received it it's as good as time as any to say I'll be adding it to my 2012 list. This album really is as the PR blurb and Uncle Charlie make it out to be.
Buy, listen, experiment and enjoy.
